Fireworks Spectacular Family Raceday 1st November 2025

fireworks various coloursTo the casual horse racing fan, Ascot Racecourse is known for two things: flat racing and the Royal Meeting. With that in mind, the course needs to do whatever it can in order to attract racegoers to events that come outside of those particular remits. The Fireworks Spectacular Family Raceday offers exactly that, not only signifying the start of jump racing season at the famous course but also a chance for families to get involved with the numerous activities on offer. Whilst the fireworks obviously take the main focus of proceedings, the racing itself is of excellent quality and those that love to see horses taking on jumps will be delighted.

It isn’t always easy to get children interested in the world of horse racing, but it is simple enough to impress them with bright things that go bang. The promise of a firework display that will be one of the biggest in the region should be enough to maintain their attention, even if they’re not all that keen on watching what the horses are up to. It is fair to say that the adults will be sufficiently interested in that to ensure that the racing doesn’t go to waste, but it is a good opportunity to get little ones used to life on the racecourse and the sights and sounds that are associated with that. There is also plenty going on off-course to keep them amused.

In terms of the racing, the feature event of the day is the Gold Cup Handicap Chase, which in many ways sets the tone for the rest of the racing. The majority of races are handicaps, which offers a chance to explain to your little one how handicap events work and the manner in which the official handicapper decides how much weight each horse should carry. There is also a National Hunt flat race, which is often used as an opportunity to get inexperienced horses the chance to take part in a race under National Hunt rules without the added stress of getting over obstacles, so that can also be explained to the kids that are with you.

Fireworks Spectacular Race Card

It goes without saying that any race card can be changed with short notice. Whether it be the Jockey Club, the British Horseracing Authority or the racecourse itself, there are plenty of parties involved in meetings at Royal Ascot that might want to make some alterations to things. As a result, it is difficult to take a look at the races that are going to take place with any degree of certainty, but it is still worth offering you a sense of what the race card is likely to look like:

Race 1 - Conditional Jockeys' Novices' Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) - 12:55

  • Grade: Class 4 Hurdle
  • Distance: 2m 3f 58y (3875m)
  • Fences: 10

12-55pmThis Class 4 race is for novice horses and conditional jockeys. Taking place over two miles, three furlongs and 58 yards, the event promises ten hurdles for the inexperienced horses to try to get over in order to stand any chance of winning.

If the Going is Good then it will usually take about four minutes and 35 seconds for the winners to get over the line, with the handicap nature of the event meaning that the official handicapper is called into action for the first time in the day.

It is a race for horses aged three and over that have an official rating of between 0 and 120, so there might well be value to be found if you look for it.  Expect a decent field of 7-10 for this one.

2025 Winner

  • Horse - Mount Anglesby (5/1)
  • Jockey - Toby McCain-Mitchell
  • Trainer - Alastair Ralph (GB)
  • Overall Prize Money - £16,231
  • For The Winner - £8,714

Race 2 - Novices' Limited Handicap Chase (GBB Race) - 13:30

  • Grade: Class 3 Chase
  • Distance: 2m 2f 175y (3781m)
  • Fences: 16

1-30pmAnother event for novices, this time aged four and over, this time a steeplechase rather than one for hurdlers. A Class 3 race, there are 16 fences to be jumped between the start of the event and the home straight. Run over two miles, two furlongs and 175 yards, it matches the first race of the day insomuch as it will take the leaders about four minutes and 35 seconds to get towards the finish line.

You will be able to keep an eye out for any slips by the handicapper in the weight assignations, with past winners coming home with odds likes 12/1, 6/1 and 9/2. The favourite has won on a few occasions since 2013, but not as many as you might hope.

In some years this can attract a decent field around 10 but in others it can be a small field, last year there we only three starters so no each-way opportunities when that happens.

2025 Winner

  • Horse - No Questions Asked (9/4)
  • Jockey - Ben Jones
  • Trainer - Ben Pauling (GB)
  • Overall Prize Money - £19,674
  • For The Winner - £10,562

Race 3 - Handicap Chase (GBB Race) - 14:05

  • Grade: Premier H'cap
  • Distance: 2m 167y (3371m)
  • Fences: 13

2-05pmA Class 1 Premier Handicap, this event is run over fences and asks the four-year-olds and over that are taking part in it to make it over 13 of the obstacles in order to win it. The distance for the race is two miles and 167 yards, with the race lasting for about four minutes if the Going is Good to Soft.

It isn't a race that sees the favourite win very often, with the victory for Boothill in 2023 being the only time that the Starting Price favourite has won the race since Ulck Du Lin managed it 2014.

In other words, there is value to be found if you can find the difference between what the handicapper thinks is a horse's ability and what they can actually carry.  In terms of the field expect around 8-10 again with a faller or two quite common.

2025 Winner

  • Horse - Teddy Blue (9/2)
  • Jockey - Brendan Powell
  • Trainer - Harry Derham (GB)
  • Overall Prize Money - £98,370
  • For The Winner - £56,950

Race 4 - Novices' Hurdle (GBB Race) - 14:35

  • Grade: Class 3 Hurdle
  • Distance: 1m 7f 152y (3157m)
  • Fences: 8

2-35pmThe second race of the day is one for novice hurdlers, giving them a chance to take on the easier jump types at one of the most famous courses in the world. It is run over one mile, seven furlongs and 152 yards and during that time the four-year-olds and over taking part in the Class 3 race will have to get over eight hurdles in their aim to be crowned the winner.

If the Going is Good to Soft, it will take the leaders around three minutes and 50 seconds to make it to the finish line. This is very much a race to look for the favourite, with the best-fancied horse winning it nine times in the 16 races that took place between 2010 and 2024.  That is even more notable when you consider this race usually has a field of around 8-12 runners, although a couple usually won't make it to the end.

2025 Winner

  • Horse - Military Alliance (3/1)
  • Jockey - Paul O'Brien
  • Trainer - Harry Derham (GB)
  • Overall Prize Money - £16,231
  • For The Winner - £8,986

Race 5 - Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) - 15:15

  • Grade: Class 2 Hurdle
  • Distance: 1m 7f 152y (3157m)
  • Fences: 8

3-15pmHaving seen the novice hurdlers enjoy a run out in the race before, the fifth race of the day presents three-year-olds and over the chance to take on the eight hurdles of this race in the fairest possible environment. That is because the official handicapper will assign weight for this Class 2 event depending on the horse's form and their rating.

Run over one mile, seven furlongs and 152 yards, Good to Soft Going will see the event completed in about three minutes and 40 seconds. Knickerbockerglory won the race in 2023 with odds of 10/1, whilst Our Champ was also rated as a 10/1 chance when winning in 2024, but favourites usually do well too, for example, Alexei winning at 13/8 in 2025.

This one will attract 10-15 runners usually with a good number pulling up, unseating or falling in most years.

2025 Winner

  • Horse - Alexei (13/8)
  • Jockey - Brendan Powell
  • Trainer - Joe Tizzard (GB)
  • Overall Prize Money - £59,022
  • For The Winner - £32,676

Race 6 - Gold Cup Handicap Chase (GBB Race) - 15:45

  • Grade: Premier H'cap
  • Distance: 2m 7f 185y (4796m)
  • Fences: 20

3-45pmThe feature race of the day was first run on the 28th of October 2006 as a Class 2 event. It was worth £100,000 and run over three miles, but three years later it was upgraded to become a Listed race. In 2011 it was upgraded again to a Grade 3, being run nowadays as a Class 1 Premier Handicap.

Taking place over two miles, seven furlongs and 180 yards, it takes a little over six minutes for the leaders to get across the finish line if the Going is Good to Soft. With 20 fences to jump during the course of the event, it is a challenge for the four-year-olds and over to complete this race and you will often see some long-odds winners claim it.

In 2023, for example, Victtorino won at odds of 20/1, whilst the Last Derby was a 33/1 winner in 2009. Between 2006 and 2025, only three favourites have won the race, suggesting it might be worth looking further afield for your bets here.

No horse has been able to win the race more than once, but the same can't be said of jockeys. Barry Geraghty made himself the man to be beaten when he won it for the third time in the saddle of Pendra in 2015, whilst Gary Moore did the same thing as a trainer when Larry handed him his third victory in 2021. The fewest runners the race has had is nine in 2007, with the most being 17 in 2011.

Generally up to half of the field do not finish this gruelling race.  In 2025 five out of twelve failed to finish the race and that was on good ground, while in 2023 6/11 failed to finish on soft ground.

2025 Winner

  • Horse - Henry's Friend (17/2)
  • Jockey - Ben Jones
  • Trainer - Ben Pauling (GB)
  • Overall Prize Money - £98,370
  • For The Winner - £56,950

Race 7 - Open National Hunt Flat Race (GBB Race) - 16:20

  • Grade: Class 3 Flat Race
  • Distance: 1m 7f 152y (3157m)

4-20pmThis bumper is limited to horses aged four and five, offering them the chance to take part in a race under National Hunt conditions but without needing to take on any jumps. Run over one mile, seven furlongs and 152 yards, it tends to last for about three minutes and 50 seconds if the Going is Good to Soft.

In the past 14 editions of this race the favourite has won on five occasions. In other words, it is a race that the bookmakers don't always come out of very well. It is also an event that has seen some decent horses gain some experience. 2013 winner Pleasant Company only lost the 2018 Grand National to a photo finish, for example.

Expect a field of around 5-10 for this one with all usually finishing given there are no fences to come unstuck on.

2025 Winner

  • Horse - Loustic Du Chatel (11/2)
  • Jockey - Brendan Powell
  • Trainer - Henrietta Knight (GB)
  • Overall Prize Money - £16,231
  • For The Winner - £8,714

About Spring Family Day

fireworks at ascot racecourse

Jump racing returns to Ascot with a literal bang over the course of the Fireworks Spectacular Family Raceday, so it is a great opportunity to kids to be introduced to the world of horse racing at one of the most famous venues for it in the world. The fact that the racing is over jumps means that the purists might choose not to attend, given the fact that that is very much not what Ascot Racecourse is known for. In many ways, that is for the best if you’re looking to attend the meeting with your family, bearing in mind the fact that the last thing you’ll want is someone being snooty about the fact that you’re there with your kids.

The racecourse will be positively encouraging of your children coming along, which is shown in the face that there are a wealth of different activities taking place throughout the day that are aimed at appealing specifically to young people. There are fairground rides on offer, for example, allowing you to take part in such things in a safe and encouraging environment. After 4pm the rides only cost £1 to go on and the proceeds are given to local charities, so you’ll be doing good at the same time as having some exhilarating fun with your little ones. At the same time, the top-class racing will be taking place to keep them entertained.

At the end of the day, though, it is the fireworks that will take centre stage. Hopefully all of the horses will be well off site by the time that more than 20,000 fireworks are sent into the sky, offering punters a pyro-musical show that will light up the night sky towards the end of October or beginning of November, depending on when the meeting is being held. The fireworks are launched from the centre of the racecourse, so you’re promised a decent view almost irrespective of where you’re located. It is the perfect way to bring the first jump racing meeting of the season to a close at one of the UK’s best racecourses.

Summary

fairground ride at ascot fireworks race dayThere are a wealth of excellent races to watch out for during the course of the Fireworks Spectacular Family Raceday, not the least of which is the feature event that is the Gold Cup Handicap Chase. That tends to be run as the penultimate race of the day, offering plenty of opportunities during the day itself for you and your associated littles ones to take advantage of the numerous family-friendly activities that are on offer all around the racecourse. That includes the likes of fairground rides, so it doesn’t just need to be on the course where the adrenaline-fuelled exhilaration is taking place if your kids are the dare-devil types.

The majority of the races run during the day are handicaps, so the official handicapper is called into action in order to assign weights for horses to carry based on their rating as well as their form. That promises the opportunity of some value, should they get their weight assignations wrong, but also the chance to explain to your little ones how handicapping works as a concept. Ultimately, though, the main focus of the day is the fireworks, with more than 20,000 of them shot into the night sky after the conclusion of the racing to the tune of a pyro-musical show that is sure to delight every member of the family in attendance.
