Golden Gate Stakes – Royal Ascot Saturday

winner crosses the line in the golden gate stakes at royal ascotThere was a race in America called the Golden Gate Fields Turf Stakes, run at Golden Gate Fields in California. This is, as you might have predicted, not that race, which was discontinued in 2009. Instead, the Golden Gate Stakes is a race run over one mile and two furlongs during the week of Royal Ascot. It was added to the roster of the Royal meeting in 2020, which was when extra races were added in order to give horses and jockeys an extra chance to get a run out during the year when racing was stopped owing to the health crisis that was taking place around the world.

The race is limited to three-year-olds and takes place on the final day of the week. It isn’t exactly the most prestigious of the races run during the meeting, but there is plenty about it that makes it interesting to punters. It is a handicap race, in line with the others that were added in 2020, meaning that weights are assigned to the horses by the official handicapper, who looks at the likes of their form and official rating in order to reach a decision about what they should carry. Given the fact that it has only been taking place for a relatively short period, what we can tell you about it is limited.

The Golden Gate Stakes gets its name from the Golden Gates, which stand at the start of the part of the racecourse where the Royal Procession starts from. It is obviously something of a tenuous link to the Royal Family, but no more tenuous than a lot of race names during the week of the famous meeting. As long as there is some link to the Royals, however spurious, there is a good chance that one of the races will be named after it. That is obviously the case here, although there is at least the link to both the Royals and Ascot Racecourse itself that makes it a little more suitable.

Being run over one mile and two furlongs, it lasts for a little over two minutes. That asks a decent question of the two-year-olds that are running in it, given their relative inexperience of such events. You can expect a decent-sized field to run in this one, adding its own sense of fun and excitement and making it tricky to predict a winner successfully. It has been run as the penultimate race on the final day of the Royal Ascot meeting, making it one of the final chances to take on the bookmakers and try to make it out of the week in the black if things go your way.

The age of the horses means that the majority of their careers is still in front of them. It is a chance to see how a young horse copes with the trials and tribulations of taking part in a massive meeting, which could then be used to follow the winners if they impressed you. Interestingly, though, no horses out of the first six winners up to 2025 went on to win their follow-up race, which perhaps paints its own picture. Something that is worth bearing in mind. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the relative youth of the race, only Oisin Murphy (jockey) and Andrew Balding (trainer) has won it more than once to date.

About The Race

Dave Draycott / The Golden Gates…….

The race for three-year-olds is one of several that is run during the week of Royal Ascot that involves the work of the official handicapper. In a perfect world, they would get the weights that the horses have to carry so spot-on that all of the participants would cross the finish line at the same time. The fact that that has never happened in the history of horse racing suggests that there’s more to it than just giving the horses weight to carry and then going from there. The weight is based in information such as their official rating, which will be between 0 and 105 for this race.

If you’re wondering whether the stall that the horse is running out of matters, the answer is that it is probably worth keeping an eye on the horses at the top end of the stalls.  So far to date we have seen:

  • 2020 Highland Chief – stall 16 of 18
  • 2021 Foxes Tales – 13/14
  • 2022 Missed The Cut – 13/13
  • 2023 Burdett Road – 9/15
  • 2024 Hand Of God – 17/19
  • 2025 Quai De Bethune – 14/18
  • 2026 Lost Boys – 14/18

When it comes to the weight that the winners carried, you cam expect them to be around the nine stone mark. The winners so far have been 9-7, 8-11, 9-3, 8-13, 9-0, 9-2 and 9-7.

The horses all had varying ratings, which ranged from 101 in 2020 to 90 in 2023. Obviously the better the rating out of a maximum of 105 for this race, the more weight the horse was likely to be asked to carry and cope with during the run.

Race Trivia

We have already given you a decent bit of information about the race, such as the weight that the winning horses were carrying and which stall there were asked to run out of, but here is another bit of trivia that you might find interesting:

Favourites and Outsiders

During the 7 runnings of the event that happened between 2020 and 2027, there were three winning favourites. Twice the winner has been give much longer odds by the bookmakers, thanks to both Highland Chief in the race’s inaugural year and Burdett Road in 2023 both coming home with odds of 20/1. It means that you can afford to look away from the favourite sometimes and think a bit outside the box instead.

Summary

Not to be confused with the defunct American race the Golden Gate Fields Turf Stakes, the Golden Gate Stakes is named in honour of the Golden Gates on the Ascot Racecourse turf. Those Golden Gates are where the Royal Procession starts, leading members of the Royal Family towards the enclosure from which they’ll watch the racing play out. It is a handicap race, meaning that weights carried by the horses are decided by the official handicapper, and is run over one mile and two furlongs. It is limited to three-year-olds with a rating of between 0 and 105.

There are numerous things that you can think about when it comes to the likely winner of the race, including the fact that the favourite has won three of the first 7 runnings of the event. Two of the seven were given odds of 20/1 by the bookmakers. If you’re the sort of person that likes to think about stall bias, you might want to consider the fact that six of the seven winners during the race’s formative years were in stall 13 or higher. The relatively large field for this even often makes it quite an open one in terms of the winner.
